X—Means "Unclassified" when used in first alpha character position, or any succeeding position of ISA instrument function tag, means "X-axis" when used as modifier [see ANSI/ISA S5.1-1984 (R1992)].
X.21—CCITT standard governing interface between DTE and DCE for synchronous operation mode on public data networks.
X.25 PAD—Device permitting communication between non-X.25 devices and devices in an X.25 network.
X.25—CCITT standard governing interface between DTE and DCE for terminals operating in packet mode on public data networks.
X.400—ISO standard for session layer; CCITT standard for messaging and document distribution protocol, also used to connect different e-mail systems.
X/Open—1984 consortium for Common Applications Environment (CAE) to test and label for conformance, strong in Europe; now holds UNIX® trade name.
XbarR Chart—In SPC, plot showing Range of sample values along with arithmetic mean of average for sample of data.
XENIX®—Microsoft® trade name for 16 bit microcomputer operating system derived from Bell Laboratories' UNIX®.
XGA—eXtended Graphics Adapter (Array); faster than VGA and causes less eyestrain, but works only on Micro Channel® 386SX or better PCs; resolution is 1024 x 768 pixels and 256 colors are supported; see CGA, EGA, PGA, SVGA, VGA, UXGA.
X-Axis—Horizontal axis on coordinate plane.
X-Height—In typographical composition of screen displays and printing, the height of lowercase letters, not including ascenders and descenders.
XHTML— eXtensible HyperText Markup Language; takes most recent HTML standard, 4.0, which allows content developers to use tags they are familiar with in HTML and allows them to extend content to XML; objective in the evolution of HTML to XML is ability to generate write-once, read-anywhere content via Internet, allowing add mobile Internet access to daily routines, such as hand-held device with schematics while crawling through a plant doing troubleshooting (or operating).
XIP—Execute In Place; technique by which software placed on PCMCIA-compatible ROM card can be executed directly from card itself instead of first being loaded into RAM.
XMAPI—eXtended MAPI; see definition: Messaging Application Programming Interface.
XML—eXtensible Markup Language; standard of World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) for computer authoring language to publish documents through World Wide Web on Internet, providing significantly more flexibility and automation potential over HTML, such as creating pages to customize for individual visitors; extremely simple dialect, or subset, of SGML which enables Web authors and designers to create their own customized tags to provide functionality not available with HTML; see SGML, HTML.
XNS—Xerox® Network System; peer-to-peer protocol developed by Xerox that has been incorporated into several local area networking schemes.
X-ON/X-OFF—Xmitter (transmitter) On/ Xmitter Off; control characters used for data flow control between two digital devices, instructing a terminal to start transmission (X-ON character, usually a "control-Q") and end transmission (X-OFF character, usually a control-S).
XOR—eXclusive OR; logic gate.
XPG—X/Open Portability Guide
X-Terminal—Dedicated platform (terminal) that is transparent to user, and designed to run X-server software; used with powerful machines that run 680 x 0 processors such as RISC computers; X is a standard base level windowing architecture for UNIX® machines and their terminals.
X-Windows™—(trademark of Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Major element of open systems concept, technique that allows video terminals in one vendor system to present views and operate as if they were video terminals in other vendor systems which reside on same network.
