Y—Means "Event," "State," or "Presence" when used as first alpha character position of ISA instrument function tag, means "Y-axis" when used as modifier, means "Relay" or "Compute" when used in any succeeding alpha character position [see ANSI/ISA S5.1-1984 (R1992)].
Y/C Video—Y (luminance) and C (color) Video information on separate signals and is of higher quality than composite but not as much as component; available on prosumer and some consumer-grade video products; same as S-Video; see Composite Video and Component Video.
Y2K—Year 2000; usually in reference to clock rollover at midnight to new millennium which was feared to cause some older computer programs to “bomb” because of inability to distinguish between year 1900 and year 2000 when only last two digits were used to implement date code due to memory limits; likely more of serious problem with information-intensive business applications, but much less likely problem with navigational-type process control systems.
Y-Axis—Vertical axis on coordinate plane.
YEL—Years of Expected Life.
Yo-yo—Something that is occasionally up, but normally down; see also Computer. J
